A message brought to you by the PCOM Library

Skelly, here, taking time to catch up on recent news and events in health care.

Did you know that the U.S. is in the midst of an opioid addiction crisis? In 2015, 12.5 million people misused prescription opioids and over 33,000 died due to opioid overdose.

To address these issues, the National Library of Medicine has created a guide with helpful links on the topic. Check it out to learn more and help decrease opioid misuse and deaths in your future patients.

MedOne Neurosurgery

Are you interested in neurosurgery? The PCOM Library offers MedOne Neurosurgery with some exciting features.  MedOne Neurosurgery contains 183 premier neurosurgery e-books, a Q&A training center with 2,300 review questions, and note taking functionality.

New MedU Modules

We’ve added two new modules to our MedU suite: WISE-MD and WISE-OnCall.

WISE-MD is designed to enhance a student's surgical education.  It covers 21 key surgical conditions using dramatizations, videos, and animations to give students a complete experience from presentation to recovery. All case modules end with in-depth case-based questions that allow students to assess their knowledge and prepare for the shelf exam.

WISE-OnCall provides students with a structured approach to assessing common patient symptoms and signs. It makes students aware of the important first steps in managing situations where a delay or misdiagnosis could have a tragic outcome.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

AAOS Ebooks and Videos

We now offer a set of e-books and videos from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The e-book library contains over 100 titles on all subspecialties and all volumes of Instructional Course Lectures.

The Orthopaedic Video Theater (OVT) includes over 600 videos. Each video includes indications, pre- and post-operative images, references, and many include outcomes information. The videos provide you with perspective from the surgeon’s point-of-view and from the surgeon’s side of the table. All books and videos are downloadable.

VisualDx Updates

VisualDx now allows you to change your language and region preferences. Additionally, the latest release allows you to search in Latin American Spanish, European Spanish, German, French, and Chinese. Changing your region will affect which diagnoses are seen in the differential results, allowing you to make a better diagnosis based on your location or locations the patient has recently visited.

VisualDx has also expanded their image collection to include custom medical illustrations. These illustrations are intended to assist clinicians by showing a visual representation of symptoms associated with certain diagnoses when a clinical image doesn’t provide adequate representation.
